Standard Course Entry Requirements

International students wishing to undertake vocational education and training should be over 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or equivalent + any stated pre-requisites. If you are under 18 please contact our admissions on:

The English level required is IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Local students must be over 18 years of age and have completed Year 10 or equivalent. If you are unsure whether you meet the entry requirements, please contact the College for assistance.

Direct Entry:

Students who have successfully completed the General English (Upper Intermediate) course at select ELICOS providers will be eligible for direct entry into Strathfield College’s vocational education and training programs. Download the list here.

VET Placement Test:

For admission to Strathfield College vocational courses (VET) English language proficiency must be demonstrated by achieving the following minimum standards: • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 500 • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 5.5 (General Training) or equivalent. • International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) 3+.

If you cannot demonstrate any of these options you will need to take the VET Entry English Test to assess your English level.

The VET Entry English Test is administered at every Friday and at 11:00 am on orientation days. It is preferable for the test to be done on the Friday before orientation. If you need to do the test on orientation day it is important that you arrive on time as late arrivals may mean that your test is delayed to another time and this may delay your start in your VET course.

Test results will be processed within 24 hrs and those who have successfully passed the test will be enrolled to start their VET course immediately. Students who do not pass the VET Test will be required to complete English programme classes, as assessed by the English Faculty Director of Studies, prior to retaking the entry test for the following intake.

The Admissions Team will contact you by phone to let you know your result. The VET Entry English Test consists of an IELTS style Reading (1 hour) and Writing component (40 minutes). The Reading test has 40 questions. Reading the questions carefully and answering questions as per the instructions is essential. For the Writing task, students are expected to produce a 250-word discursive essay answering every aspect of the question.

Students are assessed based on criteria such as using paragraphs, displaying a range of grammatical and lexical features, coherence and cohesion of ideas and meeting the 250-word requirement. Students are not allowed to use dictionaries or mobile phones during the Test. Please remember to bring pens with you.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students have the option to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This involves the assessment of learning and experience against the requirements of a qualification and removes the need for duplication of learning – this can save students time and money. For more information please refer to our Pre-enrolment handbook or contact us for more information.
